Sections of Defensie.nl not fully compliant with the Web Guidelines

The following components of Defensie.nl do not comply 100% with the Web Guidelines:

PDF's

  • Specification

PDF files on Defensie.nl.

  • Cause

The Web Guidelines impose extremely strict requirements on PDF files. Various parties provide PDFs to post on Defensie.nl. Not everyone has the specific knowledge needed to create PDF files in accordance with the Web Guidelines. Defensie.nl can therefore not guarantee that all PDFs on the site comply with the Web Guidelines.

  • Consequence

Defensie.nl believes it has sufficiently solved non-compliance by providing appropriate alternatives.

  • Alternatives

As a solution to the problem, Defensie.nl has drawn up a set of minimum requirements for PDF files on the website. In principle, it will strive to publish only PDF files that fully comply with the Web Guidelines. But for the time being, Defensie.nl also accepts PDFs that comply with the following requirements: the layout is in PDF/A-1a or PDF/UA-1, the text must be easy to select and copy, the PDF may not contain any scanned documents or images, the PDF may not contain any personal data and the right department must be mentioned in the metadata.

  • Measures

Defensie.nl imposes strict requirements on new PDF files. The PDFs should at least comply with the requirements mentioned under Alternatives.

  • Planning

The strict minimal requirements for new PDFs are already in place.

Video

  • Specification

Not all of Defensie.nl's videos comply with the Web Guidelines. There is for instance no written out text or audio file about what you can see or hear on each video.

  • Cause

Defence publishes a relatively large number of videos, that are especially aimed at giving armed forces operations more exposure and, as such, at promoting its message. Making all videos accessible would require an unreasonable amount of time and money.

  • Consequence

Some Defensie.nl visitors are unable to view the video properly, or they cannot use it at all.

  • Alternatives

The editors of Defensie.nl write a short introduction to every video, in which they briefly explain its content. These videos all appear under the 'Documents' (Documenten) tab. For more extensive information about the content of a video, please contact the Ministry of Defence by calling the Central Government Information line (Informatie Rijksoverheid) on tel. no. 1400.

  • Measures

Defensie.nl does not take measures to ensure that videos comply with the Web Guidelines before they are published.

  • Planning

For the time being, Defensie.nl is not investigating options to ensure that videos comply with the Web Guidelines. It does, however, follow developments that can reduce the costs of accessibility.

Old content

  • Specification

This involves all documents that are no longer up to date, such as old news items.

  • Cause

Some old content must remain available in the website archive. Defensie.nl does not update outdated documents retroactively, as this would require an unreasonable amount of time and money.

  • Consequence

The repercussions of this decision are minimal, as all current information is available.

  • Alternatives

Defensie.nl makes the current version of files available on the website if they are available.

  • Measures

To limit the number of less accessible documents, Defensie.nl imposes stricter requirements on new documents. If you want to use content that is not available, please contact the Central Government Information line (Informatie Rijksoverheid) on tel. no. 1400.

  • Planning

Defensie.nl is continuously working on the further development and improvement of its accessibility and related processes.
