Singapore supports antipiracy mission in Gulf of Aden

Dutch military security teams which will be travelling on board of Dutch merchant vessels will be using the port of Singapore for the storage of weapons and ammunition. This logistic support offered by Singapore gives a positive impulse to the deployment of Vessel Protection Detachments in the Gulf of Aden.

The use of Singapore for the storage of weapons and ammunition (pre-stocking) was agreed on with an intermediary. On behalf of Minister Hillen, the Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, Vice Admiral Matthieu Borsboom signed an arrangement with the Singapore Armed Forces for the use of Paya Lebar Military Airbase in Singapore on 29 February 2012. This arrangement allows the transit of conventional ammunition, small arms and equipment for the Vessel Protection Detachments  of the Royal Netherlands Navy. These teams protect vulnerable merchant ships sailing under the Dutch flag from pirates in the Gulf of Aden.
