A look at the Defence news 1 – 7 August
This month, F-16 pilots will complete four one-week aerial combat exercises over North Brabant. The activities will start today.
One exercise will take place from today until Friday. Another two will take place from Monday 21 August to Friday 25 August and from Monday 28 August to Friday 1 September. The fighter aircraft will operate from Volkel Air Base and use reserved military airspace over North Brabant and Belgium.
Next week, from Monday 14 August to Friday 18 August, the participants in the Fighter Weapons Instructor Training (FWIT) will operate from Leeuwarden Air Base and exercise over North Brabant. During the FWIT course, pilots learn about the aircraft’s weapon systems and the tactics employed during air operations. In addition, participants learn how to transfer their knowledge to new pilots.
The current FWIT class consists of Belgian, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian and Portuguese pilots. They are members of the European Participating Air Forces (EPAF).
Defence broadly represented during Canal Parade
All colours of the rainbow were represented in the nation’s capital during the Canal Parade that took place on Saturday 5 August. The parade was the highlight of Pride Amsterdam. No less than 110 employees - a record number - from all services of the armed forces represented the defence organisation on its own boat.
“This is my pride” was the 2017 Pride Amsterdam theme. “It’s a theme that fits our foundation like a glove,” explained Colonel Sandra Keijer. Keijer, the vice chair of the Foundation for Homosexuality and the Armed Forces (Stichting Homoseksualiteit & Krijgsmacht, SHK), believes that it is important for defence personnel to be able to be themselves at work. “Being open simply works better.” This year will mark SHK’s 30th anniversary.
