Dutch F-16s this week attacked an ISIS position. They were acting in support of coalition ground troops. This took place near Abu Hammam, in the east Syrian province of Deir al‑Zour.
Belgium at the helm of NATO mine countermeasures fleet
Belgium has assumed command of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1. The transfer of command from Latvia to our southern neighbour took place in Zeebrugge, Belgium. For the next six months, the Netherlands will provide the staff vessel for the squadron. The main areas of operation for this squadron are the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Cooperative venture to protect Dutch WWII shipwrecks
An investigation conducted by Dutch and Indonesian experts has shown that the shipwrecks of HNLMS De Ruyter and HNLMS Java have vanished entirely, and that that of the HNLMS Kortenaer has been partially removed. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ascertain who was responsible for salvaging the vessels. Indonesia and the Netherlands have agreed to work together closely in future to preserve and protect Dutch maritime heritage.
