A look at the Defence news 14 – 21 January

During a conference on UN peace operations that took place in The Hague, Netherlands Minister of Defence Ank Bijleveld-Schouten argued in favour of more female UN troops, stating that this would increase the effectiveness of operations.

First Dutch crews fly MQ-9 Reaper

The first 2 Dutch MQ-9 crews, hailing from the Royal Netherlands Air Force, made their first flights with the unmanned aircraft in the Unites States. The 306 Squadron at Leeuwarden Air Base is expected to begin operations with its own Reaper capability in 2020.

Highest-ranking US officer awarded Dutch royal honour

The most senior military official of the United States Armed Forces, General Joe Dunford, has been appointed Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau with swords.  He was awarded this royal honour for his excellent and invaluable services to international peace and security. The honour was presented by Minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten.
