A look at the Defence news 4 – 11 February

Over the coming weeks, the Netherlands Defence organisation will assist the 4th (US) Combat Aviation Brigade with its move back to Texas. The unit has been in Europe for months to exercise with various NATO partners.

First Dutch F-35 at US training base

The F-35 that was recently handed over to the Netherlands in Texas is now based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. Dutch F-35 pilots are trained at this new home base. It is expected that the other 7 training aircraft will follow later this year.

The Netherlands to conclude participation in the UN mission in South Sudan

On 1 September this year, the Netherlands will end its contribution to the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This decision was made mainly because the mission’s effectiveness leaves a lot to be desired. As medical support is not guaranteed outside of Juba, the 6 Dutch staff officers will not leave the city until the end of the mission.
