A look at the Defence news 4 - 10 May
On 4 May, 75 years after the liberation of the Netherlands, the armed forces were present at a large number of commemoration ceremonies. The Netherlands Minister of Defence Ank Bijleveld-Schouten laid a wreath at the Canadian War Cemetery in Holten. State Secretary for Defence Barbara Visser laid a wreath at the Grebbeberg, the scene of the major battle between the Dutch and German armies in May 1940. In mission areas and at various embassies, defence personnel also remembered those who were killed during the war.
Assistance in the Caribbean
A detachment of marines is supporting the Dutch Caribbean Coastguard in maritime border control. HNLMS Karel Doorman, which is present in the area for assistance during the corona crisis, is performing coastguard duties. On Sint Maarten, marines are supporting the local authorities in helping to maintain public order and security. Military medical personnel are assisting the corona test team on Curacao.
