Commander of the Royal Netherlands Air Force
The Commander of the Royal Netherlands Air Force is at the head of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. His most important task lies in ensuring that Air Force units are mission-ready. The commander is responsible for preparing, leading and concluding operations. He reports to the Chief of Defence (CHOD). Lieutenant General André Steur was appointed Commander of the Royal Netherlands Air Force on 14 April 2023.
Leading air operations
The Commander of the Royal Netherlands Air Force leads air operations by order of the CHOD. These could involve other Netherlands armed forces Services or foreign armed forces units.
The CHOD can also instruct the Commander of the Royal Netherlands Air force to lend support to civil authorities, both at home and abroad. This may involve lending support to law enforcement operations, providing disaster relief and humanitarian assistance, carrying out medical transports or firefighting.
