Control of the EU’s external border
The RNLM makes an important contribution to controlling the European external border; within the Netherlands, checks are conducted at the airports and in the ports. The RNLM also assists with border control at the European external borders outside of the Netherlands. To this end, they work closely with other European border control agencies.
The Netherlands is part of the European agency Frontex. Frontex guards the external borders of the EU. The organisation coordinates joint operations on land, at sea and in the air. The RNLM is the Dutch representative at Frontex. These border checks are conducted in addition to the border checks carried out by the countries themselves.
Border Security Team
Since February 2016, the Netherlands has been providing a Border Security Team to Frontex for deployment to Greece. The Border Security Team (BST) is stationed on the Greek island of Chios. Following the increased influx of immigrants, the BST supports the Greek government with the identification, registration and screening process. The border control team is led by the RNLM and comprises personnel from the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Seaport Police and the Immigration and Naturalisation Service.
