All military and civilian lives lost in combat or during peace missions since the start of the Second World War were commemorated on 4 May. A summary of Defence news in the week of 2 - 8 May.
Remembrance ceremonies not only took place during the traditional ceremony at Dam square in Amsterdam, but also at countless other locations, including the military cemeteries in Rhenen and Loenen and at war memorials in Den Helder, Rotterdam, The Hague and Soesterberg. Defence personnel in Curaçao as well as in mission areas in Afghanistan, Mali and the Middle East also commemorated the fallen.
Anti-ISIS coalition meets
The fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria continues steadily, but calls for more capabilities and flexibility. This was the conclusion drawn at an anti-ISIS meeting in Stuttgart. Eleven Defence ministers from countries at the centre of the coalition met in the German city to discuss the military campaign against ISIS and the prospects for the coming months. According to Minister of Defence Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the battle will be a test of endurance.
Defence at the forefront of digital warfare at Cyber Range
Together with Thales, the Defence organisation is developing an advanced 'cyber' training and test facility at the Dumoulin barracks in Soesterberg. The facility offers a safe and controlled research and test environment for the simulation of cyber attacks and other incidents, which could be aimed at weapon- and IT systems and satellite connections. The facility also allows for the development and testing of defence mechanisms. The Defence organisation will also use the Cyber Range for the training and instruction of its personnel.
Dutch ready to start at the Invictus Games
From 8 to 12 May, a team of Dutch men and women will take part in the Invictus Games in Florida. The event will see roughly 500 injured (former) servicemen and women from 14 countries do battle with each other in ten different sporting events. The Dutch team will take part in the cycling, powerlifting and wheelchair basketball events, among others.
