Military doctrine describes the way in which the armed forces perform their tasks. In recent years, the Netherlands armed forces has focused less on the protection of the national borders than was the case in the past. The Defence organisation's main tasks today include both national tasks and international peacekeeping missions. This new situation prompted the armed forces to develop a new doctrine, in which the foundations, starting points and preconditions for military operations are described.
