Dutch contribution to First United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF 1)
As one of the officers for the UNEF staff, Burns chose Captain J.A. Bor. He arrived with the other UNTSO observers on 12 November 1956 at the temporary UNEF headquarters in Cairo.
Negotiations
He was appointed as head of the intelligence section. In this capacity, he took part in the negotiations in December 1956 with General Mosje Dajan – the architect of the Sinai campaign – about the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Sinai. Egypt, however, did not appreciate the fact that the Netherlands, known to be pro-Israel, was part of UNEF, which meant that Captain Bor soon had to give up his position. He returned to UNTSO on 28 December 1956.
