The Dutch contribution to the Albanian pyramid scheme crisis
At the beginning of March 1997, the Netherlands decided to join the international community in sending military personnel to the region to help with the evacuation of foreigners.
At the request of the Turkish navy, on 15 March 1997, the Dutch armed forces deployed HNLMS Karel Doorman and a group of 14 marines to get Turkish citizens out of Albania. The evacuees were taken from the shore at the port of Dürres to the Turkish frigate AdaTepe.
