In the early morning of 17 August 1999, an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northwest Turkey. The cities of Izmit and Gölcük were hit particularly hard.

The earthquake killed an estimated 16.000 people. Tens of thousands were injured and approximately 600.000 were made homeless. The international relief effort started on the same day.
