On 5 June 2000, a major earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale caused serious damage on the island of Sumatra (Indonesia).

The coastal town of Bengkulu and the surrounding area were worst hit. The island of Enggano, 200 kilometres south-east of Bengkulu, was close to the epicentre and almost all its buildings were destroyed.
