On 29 August 2005, hurricane Katrina hit the south coast of the United States. The states of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico suffered particularly.
Areas were flooded and houses were destroyed. Tens of thousands of people fled their homes. The largest city in Louisiana, New Orleans, was hit hard when the levees broke. Most of the city (around 80%) flooded. More than 1.800 people lost their lives in the disaster. The relief effort by the US authorities in the disaster area was slow in getting under way. The Dutch frigate HNLMS Van Amstel provided assistance in the affected area from 7 to 13 September 2005.
