In the summer of 2005, major forest fires raged in large parts of Portugal. 15 people were killed and more than 180.000 hectares of forest and brush were destroyed.

Portugal was suffering the worst drought in 60 years and had insufficient resources to bring the fires under control. It therefore asked the European Union for assistance.
