Military personnel born before 1900

Are you looking for information about a person born before 1900?

The Central Bureau for Genealogy and the National Archives of the Netherlands (NA) are the most important sources for genealogical research with regard to army personnel born before 1900. The NA possesses various series of registers containing the service records of personnel. The number of sources for the period up to 1813 is rather limited.

The Netherlands Institute of Military History (NIMH) has the following sources at its disposal:

  • Database of Dutch personnel in the service of Napoleonic armies 1810-1813.
Contains the Dutch regiments. The database contains about 3,200 names. The database refers to document numbers (it contains no actual documents). These documents are available in the archives in Vincennes in France. Submitting merely a name and/or date of birth will not be sufficient to gain permission to consult such documents.
The database will for the time being only be available in the NIMH’s reading room.
  • Officers' name and rank lists (1725-1989).
These are also known as Officers’ Registers. Many data from the 18th and 19th centuries are missing. These registers also contain information about military personnel of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army and the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
