School for Peace Operations

The Netherlands Defence organisation provides training courses for international United Nations Observers and tailored training courses for civilians who are going to work in unsafe areas, including members of staff at the International Court of Justice, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Ministry of Justice.

These courses are conducted by the Netherlands School for Peace Operations (SPO, School voor Vredesmissies, SVV). This school is also responsible for the mission-specific training programme (missiegerichte opleiding, MGO) for military and civilian personnel going on missions abroad.

Exchanges

The school works closely together with other countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There are regular instructor exchanges with these countries as well as with other Peacekeeping Training Centres.

HEAT – Netherlands Police Force National Unit
For staff of the Netherlands Police Force National Unit who will be working in a mission area.

  • 22 February - 5 March 2021 (due to COVID-restrictions no international participants).

For Journalists of the Netherlands Association of Journalists.

For International Criminal Court staff.

UNMEoM (United Nations Military Experts on Mission)
For military personnel with the rank of Captain, Major or Lieutenant Colonel who will be deployed as military observer, military advisor or military liaison officer on a UN or EU mission (includes the mission-specific training programme).

  • UNMEoM 2021-1: 9 June - 2 July 2021, a total of 10 places (due to COVID-restrictions no international participants).
  • UNMEoM 2021-2: 24 November - 17 December 2021, a total of 20 places (pending COVID-restrictions).
