Security teams on ships
In some cases, the Defence organisation posts military security teams on Dutch sea transports.
Vessel Protection Detachments (VPDs)
VPDs are security teams comprising heavily-armed marines. They protect both extremely vulnerable and very large Dutch sea transports against pirates. The Netherlands has been deploying security teams since 2011.
The Defence organisation assesses all applications for VPDs from shipping companies on the basis of the ‘Requests for Assistance against Piracy and Armed Robbery at Sea’ roadmap.
