A look at the Defence news 26 September - 2 October

Last week, a Netherlands Defence dental team joined a Surinamese medical military and civilian team. The team is involved in a national humanitarian operation currently being conducted by the Surinamese National Army to safeguard public health in the South American country.

British and Canadian pilots given final resting place in Nijmegen

The remains of 7 British and 2 Canadian Second World War pilots have been reburied. This took place during 2 ceremonies held at the Jonkerbos War Cemetery in Nijmegen on 28 and 29 September.

Experiments and exercise scenarios with unmanned systems keep NATO countries on their toes

The past few weeks have been remarkably busy just off the coast of the Portuguese town of Sesimbra and the Troia Peninsula in the Algarve. These locations were the scene for 2 extensive NATO exercises, Exercise REPMUS and Exercise Dynamic Messenger. The exercises focused on the testing and integration of unmanned systems in maritime operations. The Royal Netherlands Navy made a substantial contribution to the exercises by deploying the amphibious transport ship HNLMS Rotterdam, the air defence and command frigate HNLMS Tromp and MV Geosea of the Mine Countermeasure Module Group.

Dutch government reviews IOB recommendations on contribution to UN mission Minusma

The Dutch government has responded to the findings and recommendations of the International Research and Policy Evaluation (IOB). In its independent final assessment, the board of the IOB asserted that the Dutch contribution to UN mission Minusma did not adequately align with the mission’s requirements. In addition, there was a lack of a political-strategic objective.
