A look at the Defence news 19 - 25 August

Last week, the Netherlands Defence organisation signed a contract with Robin Radar Systems in The Hague for the purchase of 51 mobile drone detection radars. The systems are able to detect small drones and distinguish them from birds, for example. A unique feature of the radars is that they operate from a moving platform. Defence will donate the systems to Ukraine later this year.

HNLMS Karel Doorman returns from mission in the Red Sea

The logistics and supply ship HNLMS Karel Doorman has returned from EU operation Aspides in the Red Sea. The ship helped to protect international shipping from the threat of the Houthis. With a crew of over 250, the RNLN vessel provided logistical support and medical capacity in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden during the past four months.

Ukrainian veterans build drones for their country

Ukrainian military personnel are assembling new drones at a Defence location in the Netherlands, where the fighters are recovering after being injured in the war. The small aerial vehicles are deployed at the front for surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence missions. Netherlands Minister of Defence Ruben Brekelmans met the veterans and lent the Ukrainians a helping hand.
